Substance Abuse in New York

New York City is perceived to be one of the most significant destinations as well as distribution centers for drugs across the entire United States. The state of New York is impacted most greatly by cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin and ecstasy or MDMA. Over the past months, there has been a steep rise in incidents involving methamphetamine, but trafficking as well as methamphetamine abuse has had a much smaller impact on the state of New York as compared to the other drugs previously mentioned.

  • Cocaine abuse: There are a number of cocaine rings in New York, especially in New York City. These cocaine rings are typically supplied through distributors based out of Colombia. Cocaine is generally distributed on the retail level through business sales and street sales. Cocaine organizations selling at the retail level may also deliver via car service and home delivery, and these types of delivery services are becoming increasingly popular throughout New York City. Crack cocaine presents less of a problem now than it did in the 1980s and 1990s, but it is still available throughout many of New York’s more economically depressed cities.
  • Heroin abuse: The most common form of heroin that is available in New York is South American heroin. It can be purchased in dime bags, though the most common way to buy this type of heroin is in bundles of 10 dime bags for $100.
  • Meth abuse: The trafficking, distribution and abuse of methamphetamine is limited, but it is a problem that is growing in intensity throughout New York.
  • Club Drugs: Most of the club drugs supplied to New York come from California and along the west coast. They are flown by courier to the New York Area. Most ecstasy is stamped with a logo, so there are specific brands that users can search out. There are many different popular “brands” of ecstasy available in New York, most of which are sourced from the west coast.
  • Marijuana abuse: Most marijuana that enters into New York City and some of the upstate regions of New York is brought from the southwestern United States, Canada and Florida by way of either air freight or by truck transportation. Much of the marijuana trafficking that occurs in New York is dominated by people tied to organized crime associations.

Substance Abuse Statistics

  • Gender Breakdown of Admissions: Significantly more men seem to be getting treatment for substance abuse in comparison to women. According to statistics provided by New York treatment centers, 75 percent of all admissions are by men and the remaining 25 percent of admissions are made by women.
  • Admissions Involving Alcohol: Alcohol is providing a significant number of the admissions into New York treatment facilities. 20.1 percent of all admissions involve alcoholism on its own without a secondary abused substance. An additional 32.2 percent of all admissions involve alcoholism paired with another abused substance such as marijuana or heroin for example.
  • Admissions Involving Cocaine: 9.4 percent of all admissions to New York treatment centers involve the use of smoked cocaine. An additional 4.2 percent of all admissions involve cocaine taken by another route.
  • Admissions Involving Marijuana: 11.9 percent of all admissions to treatment facilities in New York involve the use of marijuana. The marijuana problem is more significant than this, but many people using marijuana do not seek treatment for their addiction.
  • Admissions Involving Other Drugs: Only 0.2 percent of admissions to New York treatment facilities have to do with methamphetamine use. The problem with heroin is much greater, however, with a total of 18.6 percent of all admissions involving the use and abuse of this drug.

Detox and Withdrawal

If you are someone that suffers from substance abuse, it is never too late to look into getting treatment for it. Becoming an addict is probably one of the easiest things you have ever done in your life because of the way you feel every time you feed yourself your personal poison. However, getting clean is not going to be easy. In fact, it will most likely be one of the most difficult things you have ever done for yourself. That cannot stop you, though, if you ever want to become a productive member of society again. Treatment is the only way that will happen.

To begin the path to treatment, you must first admit that you are an addict. It is never easy to admit that something has such a hold on you that your life is no longer in your control. Yet, that is the very thing that you must face before you can become successfully treated and on your way to reclaiming your life. Admitting the problem is vital, but so is finding a reputable treatment facility to enter. Once you go through those doors, you are committing to doing what is needed to get you back on your feet and put you back in control of your own life.

The first thing you will face in substance abuse treatment is detoxification. There is no getting around that this is a very unpleasant experience for nearly everyone that has gone through it. This is when the body is deprived of the substance that it has been depending on in order to get it cleansed of the poison. The body rebels by starting through withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms range from mild to deadly. Medical professionals are on standby to help the addict through these symptoms, and are ready to administer lifesaving techniques, if needed. The addict’s experience with detox and withdrawal depends on what they were addicted to and what their physical condition is.

When you have gone through substance abuse and come out on the other side, you will already be a new person. The next step is one that will help you remain that way. Counselors and psychiatrists will be on hand to help you explore any mental, emotional and psychological reasons that you were susceptible to becoming an addict. Once you understand why it happened, it will be easier to fight it off in the future.
